Credit Cards Pros and Cons

by Angela on April 23, 2010

Credit cards are used and recognized by almost every merchant in the world today. Even though credit cards have been in use for quite some time, there are pros and cons to using them. Pros include: more convenient to carry around than cash, ability to buy things online and a very convenient option for people who love to travel around the world. Cons include: easier to go over your budget, prone to security issues and high interest rates and fees.

Credit cards are more convenient to carry around than cash.

One plastic card can complete many transactions without fumbling around for cash in your wallet or purse. You can go shop at a department store or even drive through your local fast food restaurant and simple swipe your card to pay. Even though credit cards are more convenient than cash, one must remember that it is also easier to go over your budget. Many times, I myself have gone over my spending limit without realizing and have suffered embarrassing moments that my credit card was declined. If you are not keeping track of what you are spending, it is quite easy to forget and go over your limit.

Credit cards do give you the ability to buy things online. One can shop from the luxury of their favorite recliner and simply click on the mouse button to purchase almost anything online. You can buy pizza to be delivered online and not ever talk to a real person on the phone. However, since you are purchasing online, your credit card is prone to security issues. If you are not purchasing on a secure website, there is a possibility you could suffer identity theft. That is to say that someone is watching your transaction and has access to your credit card and any information you put in for it on a specific website from which you are purchasing items.

Credit cards are a very convenient option for people who love to travel around the world. Since most major credit cards such as: Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted worldwide, there is no need to go to a foreign money exchange. You simply carry your little plastic card/cards around with you anywhere you go when you travel. If you lose your card, you can simply cancel it within minutes which can prevent someone else from using it illegally. Unfortunately, credit cards are subject to high interest rates and fees. If you do not read the fine print with your credit card company, you will more than likely be paying more as you spend more to pay off your credit card bill. Interest rates are a main reason why people fall behind on their credit card bill payments. Most credit card companies nowadays have interest rates as high as 25%. Make sure you know and understand how interest rates and fees work before you go on a spending spree.

Credit cards run this world because of their convenience. There are pros and cons to using a credit card. Pros include: their convenience compared to cash, ability to purchase items online and frequent traveler convenience to purchase around the world. Cons include: overspending on your budget, security issues online and high interest rates and fees. Before you go and use your credit card for any transaction, make certain you understand the pros and cons to help you enjoy your credit card better.
